Following up on the popular “Canadian Wildlife” silver coin series, the 2014 Canadian Peregrine Falcon 1 oz silver coin is the first of the four-coin “Birds of Prey” series. Minted in extra-fine .9999 silver, the same as the Silver Maple Leaf, this 1 troy ounce bullion coin is limited to a mintage of 1 million. The reverse was designed by Canadian artist Emily Damstra, who also designed the Pronghorn Antelope and Wood Bison for the “Canadian Wildlife” series, as well as the 2012 circulating Canadian $1 coin (the loonie,) and the $20 for $20 silver Swimming Polar Bear bullion coin, among many others. The reverse of this particular coin shows a Peregrine Falcon, talons extended, in the moment before delivering its devastating attack. Able to dive at speeds exceeding 200 mph, the Peregrine Falcon is the world's fastest bird, and has been used since antiquity for hunting game. The obverse of the coin features the Susanna Blunt image of Queen Elizabeth II, as Queen of Canada. This side includes the year-date of 2014, and the denomination of $5. As legal tender of Canada, the weight and purity of this coin is guaranteed by the Canadian government.
